In the textual version of the finale, Julia has returned home. The visceral struggle is shown to us as self-affecting in Julia’s moment of nausea, and her perseverance: she is absorbing and adapting to a new reality. The body exhibits the signs, responding to the triggers of the mind – and she disciplines herself, reconnecting to her core. The work continues.

As Crimp shows us in Men Asleep, and as he has previously shown, especially in The Country, the most transgressive acts between couples are often carried out without express violence. The abuse (mental and emotional rather than physical), rather, is chronic; it is latent. It is transactional pragmatism, not love, and certainly not desire that primarily preserves marriages. The violence, therefore, does not require an act of climax – its very power emerges from the fact that it is a dense presence, pervasive, unresolved. It is the act of standing successfully on a tightrope, and negotiating the sense of self and identity – the wild inner life that emerges from these – alongside the decay of an insidious, corrosive relationship that is the primary challenge. The sacrifice is enough, and it does not mandate further dramatic escalation; the crisis and the crime are no less real without it.
